Math is your child’s second language
Math is your child’s second language

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “Math”?

Doyou get a picture full of mathematically formulas? Do you feel anxious in seeing them, and not to be entitled sure how to solve a given complex calculation?

Your child and other children have at their given age yet not the idea of formulas, but they will discover them naturally through their own discovery in learning. They discover the formula in math in similar complexity as they discover their mother tongue to build correct grammatical sentence (language formula).

Let’s discover the roots for math. Math is only a concept to explain things in our universe, on how it works. We humans have the core tendencies to discover on “what it is” (0-6 years old), “how it works” (6-12 years old) and then the long life mission can I replicate it and improve it to my given social circle. Maria Montessori describes us all, that we have a “mathematical mind”, on which makes us unique on planet earth.

How do we spark the interest in children learning numbers in a Montessori School?

Simplein using concrete forms of learning methods, the introduction of the PinkTower. The tower is made out of 10 blocks which are preciously increasing by1cm to each side. The smallest unit is 1cm3 and the largest 10cm3.The child is enable to visually see the smallest unit and the largest unit, furthermore to feel the lightest unit and the heaviest unit as the childcarries one piece at a time from the designated area to their work area. Theyfeel they need to walk ten times and may start counting unconsciously. Thechild will start learning the first mathematical vocabulary of small, large, smaller as, larger as equal, etc.

As soon the child is able to recognize verbal words, the teacher will introduce the child to the abstract of the verbal sounds of the written form that “one” is written as “1”. The child will use the power of their sensorial stage development to feel and touch each of those numbers, and continuous repeat the vocabulary “one”, “two”, … while seeing and touching the “1”.

You may ask, what can I do at home to enhance the mathematical ability of my child?

Everything, all our actions are connected to math. You may plan on traveling to an overseas country and neither you nor your child has seen the given local currency. You could work together with your child and your child will quickly learn all the sensorial elements of the money, the color, the size, weight, etc. The child and you will engage after the sensorial experience to discover the given value of the currency and each of you will make a sensorial connection to the value.

What else can I do?

As math is everywhere in our life, we can find math in the kitchen too. Invite your child to cook with you not only they enhance their sensorial tasting for various vegetables and fruits which is a different topic for language.

We will ask please fill up the glass with water full, please give me a half full glass of water, please give me a bit of water until this line. The child is starting to learn volume, percentage, ratio, etc., just by only filling up a glass of water.

After water you need a bit of salt, how much is a bit? Ask your child please put one teaspoon of salt or two teaspoon of salt. The words of one, two, … are learnt and the child needs to count: one teaspoon, two teaspoons, …

Can you find me an activity which cannot be explained with math? Everything we do in life is interlinked with math, as numbers, size, shapes are all words from the mathematical language. Therefore we do “not” teach math. The child will be very engaged in those activities until the elementary age, as in the universe there is a lot to add up.
